Fume ventilator - assembled

I built this contraption to ventilate fumes whenever I want to do a painting indoors. It is made out of 1/2" copper pipe, masonite board, and particle board. It is surrounded by a plastic drop sheet fastened to the top with handyman's best friend, duct tape.

It uses an ordinary bathroom exhaust fan connected to a plastic dryer vent hose, which is connected to a dryer vent port attached to a piece of plywood. The vent port is placed in a window and an extra piece of drop sheet or garbage bags can be taped to the open portion of the window.

Also, there is a light fixture to illuminate the work area and speed up the drying of the painting. Wiring is pretty much simple house wiring using:

  • AWG 14 2-conductor cable
  • Three-prong extension cord (cut off socket end)
  • Two surface mount switch boxes
  • One switch box cover
  • Bathroom exhaust fan
  • Ceiling mount fixture and box
  • Single-pole light switch
  • Box cable clamps
  • Marrette connectors

Fume ventilator - disassembled for storage

As you can see, I did not sweat-solder the four support legs, which enables me to collapse the ventilator for easy storage under my bed.

Also, the vent hose can easily detach from the exhaust fan as well.

The drop-sheet can fold over the top piece until needed again.
